SCIENCE IMPULSE

The Science Impulse program, offered by Technology Research Unit of the CEA (DRT), is a great opportunity to bring your ideas to life and lead your own research project for the benefit of industry and society.

Linked to the technological and strategic challenges of the DRT institutes (CEA-Leti, CEA-Liten and CEA-List) your research project will be conducted over 3 years and will benefit from funding commensurate with its ambition.

You will also have privileged access to the world-class research facilities available at the CEA and the possibility of building your team by hiring post-doctoral fellows or interns.

0 CHALLENGES PER YEAR

Each year, new technological challenges are to be faced, addressing strategic and high-impact issues for a better future

In brief

Why you should apply ?

Launched by CEA's Research & Technology Division in September 2020, Science Impulse is a program dedicated to young researchers to give them the opportunity to turn their ideas into research projects

We want to bring high-level early-career researchers to CEA Tech to contribute new ideas on strategic technology-related topics that have a positive impact on society. Whatever your planned career path might look like, all challenges are guaranteed to give you a meaningful experience. Your work—deeply rooted in science and technology—will address a major societal challenge. And your project will be at the center of a major innovation ecosystem likely to bring you unique research and career opportunities.

Each project will be supported over the three years with a package commensurate with the project needs as discussed during the preparation phase. This package will include—in addition to the winner’s salary—all of the support required to carry out the project, including hiring a two-year post-doctoral researcher to be supervised by the winner, technical and scientific support from CEA Tech teams, and access to CEA Tech facilities as needed.

Of course, the winners will also be able to build on our institutes’ prior research and are strongly encouraged to combine the results produced by different CEA Tech departments in novel ways to drive groundbreaking advances.

Science impulse

Who is eligible ?

Junior researchers (1,2) of any nationality can apply for a Science Impulse fellowship to conduct research at CEA Tech for a minimum of three years.

(1) PhD thesis defense date between two and seven years prior to the Science Impulse submission deadline.

The deadline may be extended for special circumstances like a maternity leave since the candidate’s PhD thesis defense. Contact us if you have special circumstances.

(2) Science Impulse should be your first experience at the CEA.

Current and former CEA researchers may not be eligible. If you are not new to the CEA, contact us to find out if you are eligible to apply!

The 2022 challenges in a nutshell

CEA-LETI, Grenoble

Design a closed-loop implantable multisystem sensing device for neurological disease management

CEA-LITEN, GrenoblE

Innovate massive data treatment methods to boost the analysis of lithium-ion batteries characterizations from large-scale facilities

CEA-Leti, Grenoble

Innovate for digital frugality with early and coarse sensor data quantization

CEA-List, saclay

Innovate new processing paradigms, data intelligence, methodologies and tools for frugal digital

World-class ecosystems

The Science Impulse fellows will work at one of our institutes in either in Grenoble or Paris-Saclay (top 15 in the ARWU 2020 Shanghai Ranking), both world-class science and technology ecosystems.

in Grenoble :

CEA-Liten is a major research institute spearheading the EU’s efforts to limit dependency on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in three key areas: renewable energy, energy efficiency/storage, and development of materials. CEA-Liten is the only European research institute to span the entire value chain from the development of materials to pilot manufacturing.

CEA-Leti pioneers micro and nanotechnologies, developing differentiating solutions that ensure competitiveness in a wide range of markets. The institute tackles critical challenges such as healthcare, energy, transportation, telecommunications, and computing.

Paris-Saclay :

CEA-List is a smart digital systems expert, leading research on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, IoT, software, and radiation control. The institute has its finger on the pulse of tomorrow’s technological breakthroughs and develops disruptive technologies for advanced manufacturing, embedded systems, data intelligence, and ionizing radiation monitoring for healthcare.

You are a talented early-career scientist who has already produced excellent work and shows potential to be a research leader.

Take the opportunity to propose and lead a research project: CEA Tech offer a full package over 3 years, including your salary and adequate means to hire at least a 2-year post doc to work under your supervision and access to relevant experimental and numerical CEA facilities.

A LEADING RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY ORGANIZATION

The CEA: A major global center for research and innovation

The CEA, the only government research organisation in France in the Derwent Top 100 Global Innovators™ (2018, 2019, 2020, 2022), catalyzes and accelerates innovation for France’s industrial economy. Companies in virtually all industries (transportation, healthcare, safety, energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, and more) turn to the CEA to help them develop differentiating products using innovative processes and materials.

The technologies developed at the CEA are protected by a broad portfolio of patents. And, with regional offices across France, the CEA is positioned to bring greater innovation to local partners and support value creation and long-lasting jobs. To respond to growing demand for innovation, the CEA is also ramping up support for its own startups, which play a vital role in transferring the know-how and technologies developed at CEA labs to the market. More than 100 startups have been created to date; 75% of them are in deep tech, which means that the path to the market is still long and will require substantial investments in R&D and prototyping.
