Development of optomechanical clocks with integrated electronics

Time references (clocks) are components used in the majority of electronic circuits. CEA-Leti is a pioneer in the development of high-frequency/high-performance clocks using optomechanics, which combines two cutting-edge technologies: microelectromechanical resonators (MEMS) and silicon photonics. This breakthrough approach allows overcoming the constraints of current clock technologies. CEA-Leti has developed optomechanical components with state-of-the-art performance and is already working on the next evolutions of these components. The objective of the thesis will be to develop the first demonstrator of integrated clock with optomechanical resonators. The thesis will take place between two laboratories: the Laboratory of Sensor and Actuator Integration Technologies (LICA) and the Laboratory of Integrated Circuits for Energy Management, Sensors, and Actuators (LGECA). In this context, you will work collaboratively with engineers and students from CEA-Leti to: - Measure, study, and model existing optomechanical components on the chip. - Design and implement an integrated electronic circuit suitable for these components. - Characterize the clock demonstrator and assess its performance for target applications. - Design and characterize new optimized optomechanical resonators. - Disseminate results through international conferences and scientific journals. Given the advanced nature of the technology being developed, the challenge is assured. This topic is highly interdisciplinary, combining physical/mechanical studies, photonics, and electronic design.
